In the so-called Global North made up of formerly colonizing European countries and their white settler colonial offshoots such as USA, Canada and Australia, various shades of Fascist worldviews and ideas are on the rise while political violence is returning to the United States.
On 13 September, the United Kingdom had witnessed the largest ever rally of essentially white English fascists – estimated between 100, 000 to 150,000. The resurgence of Far-Right movements, with their quest for a white and Christian supremacist states under (misogynist) “strong men “un-mistakably signals the end of liberalism, democracy and human rights, which had been the rhetorical cornerstones of the Western governments.
In sharp contrast, people power uprisings on the Asian continent (Southeast, South and the occupied Palestine territories) remain informed by the universalistic ideals of human rights. The popular uprisings the world has very recently witnessed in Indonesia and Nepal, as well as in other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Myanmar aspire to secure not just free speech and other political freedoms – which the Western capitalist states have long cherry-picked for promotion abroad – but the right to life, equality, and other economic and social rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Certainly, the Palestinian people have been engaged in nearly eighty years of struggle for their right to self-determination and liberation from Israel’s settler colonial occupation of their indigenous Palestine unconditionally back by the very Western states, which until recently had preached to the world about the virtues of human rights, democracy, rule of law and civil society.
