“You can eat whatever and whenever you want, but you did not appreciate that. During the Pol Pot Regime,1 I could not even dare to eat an insect for fear of getting killed”. I would always hear this from my grandmother, without fail, whenever my siblings or I did not finish our food. Thinking back, I never once wondered why she would always pack our refrigerator with so many foods, or her constant panic when the fridge was half empty. At that time, it never crossed my mind that my grandmother was probably traumatized from the psychological effect of three years, eight months, and twenty days of starvation,2 and that she was not only a single mother or just a grandmother, but was also a genocide survivor who was once had suffered degrading treatment by the Khmer Rouge. It has crossed my mind, since however, I might have lacked empathy.

A lot of young people nowadays are more knowledgeable about genocides and mass atrocities whether through formal education or non-formal education. During history class exams in school, we might be able to answer questions about key people, places, or events. However, although many of us can identify the manifestation of genocide, how it was planned, and executed, but how many of us can empathize with the victims? In a book written by a Holocaust survivor, Hedi Fried, titled “Questions I am Asked About the Holocaust” which I translated into the Khmer language in 2019 with the Khmer title “Bochea Plerng”,3 Hedi said “those who raised the younger generation, parents, and teachers, impart this knowledge to their children and students with the help of history books, monuments, and museums. But the way in which it is passed on is very important. If knowledge only addressed the mind, it is easily forgotten”.

The teaching of genocide should needs to be stressed or discussed extensively, particularly the process which leads to genocide; it can happen in a time of peace or in a time of war and it is never committed without clear, multiple warning signs. At the same time, it should also include a lesson on the harmful effects of racism, prejudice, and discrimination, while highlighting the importance of speaking out against acts of intolerance. Outside of the classroom, genocide education should also encompass a one-on-one conversation with living witnesses or survivors, this oral history learning is a crucial for empathy with the victims, which in turn enables young people to understand better the acts of genocide, the grave consequences of such heinous crimes, foster memorization, and detect early warning signs and genocide denial.

During one public forum in Prey Veng province hosted by the Documentation Center of Cambodia to encourage intergenerational dialogue between the young generation and Khmer Rouge regime survivors, Piet Puthchea, 22 years old, born two decades after the collapse of the regime, expressed his surprise upon realizing the grave hardship of people living under the genocidal regime. He said, “After listening to the elders talking about their experience under the regime, I understand now that daily life under the Khmer Rouge was difficult. How can people could not even eat fruits or vegetables that they work so hard to grow. How can people be so cruel enough to starve or kill their own villagers. To prevent the repeat of this history, we really must learn and seek better understanding of this regime”.

Constant vigilance is needed

We are now seeing the rising of hate crimes in the United States and the growth of Neo-Nazi sympathisers in other countries. We must remain constantly vigilant of warning signs and diligence in our commitment to embracing empathy, promote democratic values, human rights, respect for diversity, and tolerance. That was why two of my Cambodian woman researcher colleagues, Farina So, Sopheak Pheana and I spoke publicly to honour the memories of Rohingya victims on the 3rd anniversary of Myanmar genocide last August. As one of the young generations who was born 20 years after the genocidal regime in the country, I am optimistic that peace, justice, and harmony will prevail when we stand in solidarity to speak out and stand up against all forms of hatred, discrimination, racism, and social injustice.

Sovicheth Meta is a translator and researcher at the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam), which catalogues historical materials from the genocidal Khmer Rouge period from 1975 to 1979. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from the Institute of Foreign Language of the Royal University of Phnom Penh. She first worked for DC-Cam in June 2018 as a volunteer for six months. During this time, she had the opportunity to conduct research on the Khmer Rouge regime, listen to survivors, and see primary source documents, which inspired her to seek and obtain a more permanent position at the center so she could contribute to her country’s struggle for identity in the wake of the Khmer Rouge regime and educate the next generation.
