The TIME Magazine article that was recently published draws largely on grounded Myanmar voices including the Justice for Myanmar, a 2025 recipient of Sweden’s Right Livelihood Award, Singapore-based former Myanmar diplomat Daw Moe Thuzar, FORSEA Co-founder Dr Maung Zarni and anonymous Myanmar experts inside the country.

The elections are held amidst the country’s internal fragmentation while the external borders remain intact. China, the singularly most important external actor in Myanmar’s national affairs, maintains that the elected bodies are a venue for resolving the country’s internal conflicts, a stance several powerful neighbours and the junta allies such as India and Russia also adopt.

Echoing the anti-junta opposition groups, Western governments on the other hand, dismiss the elections as ” a sham” while the Association of Southeast Asian Nations  (ASEAN) remain largely ineffectual with its consensus mantra of “Five Points Consensus”.
